ATHLETIC SUCCESSES:
Rhett has played soccer for virtually all his life, highlighted by a spot on the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team. After three years at Stanford, he took a year off to play for the U.S. National Team and competed at the Olympic Games in Barcelona. He graduated in 1993 and after taking 18 months off from the game because of a back injury, Rhett returned to soccer and played in various professional leagues, including the American Professional Soccer League, United States Indoor Soccer League and Continental Indoor Soccer League. With the founding of Major League Soccer in 1993, Rhett signed on with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and started 63 games in his three seasons with the team.
CAREER PATH:
In 1993, while in school, Rhett served an internship with a doctor of electrophysiology in Spokane, Wash. He was offered a position with the doctor, but decided to pursue a professional soccer career. After retiring from soccer in 1998, Harty traveled for 6 months through India and Tibet, pondering his future before he decided to return to Washington. He accepted a job at St. Jude Medical, where he currently works in biotechnology, preparing pacemakers and defibrillators for patients in the operating room.
RHETT'S WORDS OF WISDOM:
"When you decide to move on, know it in your heart, embrace it, and step into the next arena. Take some time, review all the pros and cons, then make a decision and don't look back. There is so much to accomplish and to experience outside of sports and you will be amazed at how many doors will be opened to you if you approach your post-Olympic career with a humble and dedicated work ethic!"
"The same principles apply in sport, business and in life in general. There will always be triumphs and downfalls, and yet you still keep moving forward - learning, gaining experience, perfecting yourself, and always performing to the best of your ability. The rest is out of your control."
