Maynard, Mass. - June 1, 2004 - Monster®, the official online career management sponsor of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team, today announced it has become the presenting sponsor for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Judo. The trials, which determine the U.S. Olympic Judo Team, will be held June 5th at the San Jose State University Event Center, San Jose, California. Monster is the leading global online careers site and flagship brand of Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NASDAQ: MNST).
In conjunction with USA Judo and the San Jose Sports Authority, Monster will receive prominent exposure throughout the tournament venue. Visibility includes Monster logos and marks both inside and outside the venue as well as public address announcements throughout the competition.
This agreement marks Monster's first sponsorship of a specific Olympic sport. Monster was the official online career management sponsor of the 2002 U.S. Olympic Team and the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, and created the first ever career management website designed exclusively for U.S. Olympic athletes and Olympic hopefuls. TeamUSAnet, a joint effort between Monster and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), features an assortment of career management tools including a resume builder, job search access, an Olympic mentoring network, and other distinctive content that caters specifically to athletes. It has now received over 1,000 profile entries from Olympic athletes and hopefuls since its creation.
One of those athletes is Jimmy Pedro, a Monster employee, Olympic bronze medalist (1996 Games, Atlanta), and the 1999 and 2000 world champion in the sport of judo. Following retirement from competition in 2000, he was integral in the development of Monster's Olympic program. Now, Pedro is on the brink of a major comeback as he attempts to make his fourth consecutive U.S. Olympic Team. He embarks on the Olympic Team Trials as the #1 seed in the 73 kg (161 lbs.) category.
"The U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Judo provide a great venue for us to extend the Monster brand and leverage our U.S. Olympic Team sponsorship. We're excited to support this event and its athletes as well as the entire 2004 Team in their pursuit of achievement and success at the Games in Athens," said Steve Pogorzelski, president of Monster, North America. "We're also proud of our employee, the most decorated U.S. judo athlete in history, Jimmy Pedro, in his quest to make his fourth U.S. Olympic Team."
"We're excited to have Monster's help at, and support for, the 2004 Olympic Team Trials in Judo. This event showcases some of the world's finest athletes striving to represent their country in Athens this summer," said Ron Tripp, president, USA Judo.
The trials will take place at the San Jose State University's Event Center on June 5th. Elimination matches will begin at 1:00 p.m. PDT, with finals slated to start at 7:00 p.m. PDT.
